Most People Leave Exams Behind.
I Built a Career Around Them.
I've always been the person who wants to know why one answer earns full marks while another falls just short. That curiosity helped me achieve 3 (5**) - the highest possible grade in Hong Kong's university entrance examinations - and sparked a lasting fascination with how exams really work.
Eventually, that exam obsession escaped the classroom. I've since written two books, built a successful education business, been invited to speak at London International Conference on Education in Oxford and begun my Master's degree at the University of Cambridge.
Exam Geeks is where I share what I've learned, helping you understand what examiners want, avoid costly mistakes and walk into every exam feeling ready.
Why My Method Works
I'm slightly obsessed with what happens between reading something in your notes and producing a full-mark answer under exam pressure. My method is designed around three things the brain needs to perform well: clarity, retrieval and feedback.
Here is what many students never realize: recognizing an answer when you see it is very different from producing it independently. Rereading notes creates familiarity, which can easily feel like mastery. An exam demands something harder - the ability to recognize the clues hidden in a question, retrieve the right knowledge and shape it into exactly what the examiner rewards.
That is what my method trains. Students learn to decode each question through its command word, content cues and mark allocation. They then build the answer from memory before comparing it with the examiner's logic. Every lost mark is traced back to a specific cause: missing knowledge, weak retrieval, misreading the question or imprecise expression. Once students can identify the cause, they can make the right correction.
